My wife's brother closed out my mother-in-law's checking after she passed away and he sent my wife a check that we deposited early in January 2019. It was a +$2,000 check. Was it a gift or how do I file it on our 2019 income taxes?

You do not need to file it on your tax return. It is an inheritance, and is not taxable and it is not reported on your tax return.
Thank you so much for that timely wonderful answer. Intuit products are phenomenal as are the people that work for them or the users.
