Im requesti g a refund. Fed up with TT and their service.
previously your comment said the update was coming on Feb 21st I believe? I got an update and now Turbotax is asking for the GEOID number??? what is that?
Thank you. I provided the feedback as you suggested. Good idea. I will continue to look for ways to provide this feedback so that TT will actually hear the complaint.
No - the way that I was filling out my info... "Fixing an error before submitting" -- it does not have a link for finding your GEOID... let me try and access the form another way...
It now says 3/2/2024 why keep extending that date
I talked to a TT specialist on phone and she wasn’t aware of this error. I shared my screen and showed her the error loop, she’s going to reach out to her supervisor to get more information about this. If you all can take a moment and talk to a live representative about this, I’m sure we’ll get some actual answers soon. Attaching screenshots on how to contact them and have them call you.
The GEOID number is new for 2023. In 2023 the IRS has clarified their instructions for electric charging station the GEOID is a 11 digit number the IRS uses to determine if the property is allowable to claim the product.
To find the GEOID go to
geocoding.geo.census .gov/geocoder/geographies/address?form
(Remove the space between census and .gov) (turbo tax will not allow me to post a url)
you will enter your address hit search. The search will give you the longitude and latitude coordinates. If scroll to the bottom of the webpage you will find the GEOID with the census tract (its the 11 digit number under the Census Tract section)
Per IRS instructions
Attach a separate statement listing, for each property, a description and eligible census tract location for the property, including the 11-digit census tract Geographic Identifier (GEOID) for the population census tract. The 11-digit census tract GEOID is a GEOID defined by the U.S. Census Bureau and comprised of a 2-digit state GEOID, 3-digit county GEOID, and 6-digit census tract GEOID. The 11-digit census tract GEOID provides a unique identifier for each population census tract in the United States, including tracts in U.S. territories.
Well I got GEOID info but it error out on total cost and TurboTax will made update by 3/2/2024
This is good advice. Because I live in a metro area and in a well-off census tract, I appear to be ineligible. This at least means I can go ahead and file my taxes.
TT certainly botched this, but the clarification came quite late from the feds.
Following up, I ran through the EasySteps for form 8911 again today. They ask for the census tract but don't have the logic built in to detect that I am not eligible. Pretty poor performance. I'd love to get the $1000 credit, but I am essentially certain that I am right and they are wrong. Who's the professional here?
@jwnmA if you read the instructions, they expect you to self verify that you are in an eligible census Tract.
Thanks I did exactly that, file with zero cost and it let me file my tax return, it is way to late in the game and I don’t want loose my EV credit so forfeit my alternative fuel credit.
Doesn't matter where you are. If your tax return involves form 8911, you are stuck until they fix it (as of 2/25, they told us 3/2). TurboTax software won't let you file regardless. The software suspends you using the One More Thing To Check - transmit loop.
