I made a charitable contribution of a plane to a museum. The appraised value is over $100,000. Turbotax seems to be making the correct calculations when I enter the data. I do receive the proper deduction. But form 8282 seems to be incorrectly completed/generated.
Section A part one, (1), of the form is for donated property of less than $5,000. Yet this section has been completed by TT.
Section B part One, (1), is for property over $5,000 and for vehicles (yes the IRS considerers cars, boat, and airplanes as vehicles). This section is blank.
Also TT takes an error unless I specify that the plane has mileage (0.0 ) works. The IRS instructions are to leave this blank for an airplane.
Any ides as far as what I may be doing incorrectly - or is TT in need of a fix?
Thanks for any help

Which can be done simply by indicating that a different type of item was donated (such as a work of art).
You are supposed to use Section A if you are reporting the donation of a qualified vehicle described in Section 170(f)(12)(A)(ii) for which an acknowledgement under Section 170(f)(12)(B)(iii) is provided.

Thank you for the links.
Here is perhaps confusing part(s) of the donation.
1) The charity accepted the donation for display purposes. They did not and will not sale it now or in the future. This is not your typical donation of a vehicle ( which is usually sold, and the proceeds used to fund the charity )
2) An appropriated appraisal was obtained. The appraisal is the basis for the deduction. The appraiser provided a signed 8283 (Part 4) The Museum acknowledge the donation and signed Part 5.
3) In this case it seems to me that Part 1.A should not be used. If that is correct (and I may be wrong). I have not discovered a way to have TT generate the appropriate version of the form. But it appears to have used the provided information correctly (meaning the the expected amount (limited as appropriate) was applied to the taxes.
Is there any case/circumstance where part 1 section B would be generated by TT?
Thanks for the help
If you happened to enter (or changed your entry) to another item in Step-by-Step Mode, such as art, I believe you would see that entry listed in Section B.
[note that Section 170(f)(12) addresses contributions of used motor vehicles, boats, and airplanes, the claimed value of which exceeds $500]
Here is a excerpt from the link you provided.
A vehicle (including a car, boat, or airplane) if your deduction for the vehicle is limited to the gross proceeds from its sale and you obtained a contemporaneous written acknowledgment,
So if there was a sale - then I get your point. But for now let's drop this and I will seek elsewhere.
For 2020, it's too late to e-file.
Get that form in fillable PDF format from the IRS website and fill it correctly for inclusion with your other forms and schedules.
For 2021 TurboTax is preliminary and will get many updates.
The tax year, and version of TurboTax, is not the issue here @fanfare
If you're going to submit a signed form, then you have to fill it out by hand and file on paper anyway.
I realize you're trying to discover/confirm the correct entries by seeing how TurboTax does it.

Thank you for the alternative path idea. I will give that I try, but let's assume that it will work.
I will wait for the TT 2021 and try to recreate.
There are two goals for my questioning
1) Insure that TT is capturing the correct information and using it as part of my total tax return in the correct manner. ie: get the deductions and final tax amount correct. So far it appears that this is not working if I take the technically correct path of claiming a 'vehicle' over 5K, with appraisal, and retained by the charity. This needs to be reported to TT support if not correct in 2021 program.
2) Generate the correct form(s) ( then I can also attached the actual signed forms any supporting documentation).
Thank you for your assistance.
I agree, but we will have to wait quite some time (most likely a couple of months) for the 2021 program to be fully updated and functional before we can make a determination.
Regardless, I am sure you are aware that you should complete the signed form and attach that to your return (rather than attach an additional form that was created by TurboTax).
as pointed out by @rjs
the completed and signed form can be mailed separately, within three business days after e-Filing.
See Form 8453.
