I refinanced my mortgage in 2024. the 1098 I received for the original loan indicates an outstanding principal amount. Shouldn't it be ZERO? Should I enter ZERO in that block in TurboTax or the amount listed on the 1098?

You should enter your two Forms 1098 into TurboTax as they are. Enter your Form 1098 from your original loan first and then your refinanced one second.
You must answer the questions in TurboTax correctly for TurboTax to recognize that one loan is a refinance and the other was the original loan.
Enter the 1098 for the new loan second:
Enter your Form 1098 from your original loan first. Answer "No" to "Is this the most recent for your loan?"
