Foreign tax credit

Turbotax says I do not need to file form 1116 for foreign tax credit. However, when I run the final check, it says I need more info on form 1116?

Try to delete your form 1116 by going to forms>locate the 1116 in the left pane>delete the form by selecting delete form at the bottom of the page. Also delete all worksheets or any other form that are part of the 1116.

Foreign tax credit

Dave I cannot transmit my returns.  I keep getting an error message "unable to locate attachment at /attachment/ Form 1116 Schedule B.pdf.  I do have carryover foreign tax credits.

I have checked the message boards and this appears to be a common problem.  It was supposed to be fixed by March 31.  Some users claim that the fix is working.  Others. like me, find that it is not.  I have the desktop version of TT.  All updates are current.

Can you tell me what my options are?

I was told I could mail in my returns.  But New York requires an electronic return.  My other choice is to not reflect the carryover credit and file an amended return in the future.

If a fix was done, why am I still getting this message.  I would appreciate any help you can offer.

I tried that already but I am willing to try one more time.

This does seem to be a common update problem that happens with  retail versions of the Turbo Tax CD bought from Costco or other retail locations. If you are in this select group of clients, let me offer this solution.

Purchase a download of a Turbo Tax product here. Before installing however, make sure you uninstall your CD version of your return. After installing, contact Turbo Tax product support customer service here to see how you can receive a refund for your CD version you purchased, if you purchased it from a retail location.

Dave:

Thanks for your input.  Yes, I bought a retail version of TT from a local retailer.  I am concerned that if I try your approach, I may run into more problems then I want.  Based on the string of messages, I believe my best option is to file without the carryover credits.  The current ones would still be allowed and no Form 1116 would be required.  After my returns are accepted, I can then file an amended return for the carryover credit.

Since it is so close to the filing date, I would not have to run the risk of not being able to file electronically and being forced to paper file with all of its inherent problems.  Wish me luck.

I do want to thank you for working with me through this thought process.  I just wished TT would have made these options clearer form the beginning.  I never realized there was a product difference depending on where you made your purchase.  I have been using TT for around 15 years.  Never have I run into a problem like this that TT did not address and fix immediately.  I hope the problems I encountered this year are not indicative of future dealings with TT.
