Are they completely different employers?   You didn't accidentally use the same EIN number for both?   As long as the EINs are different, TurboTax should give you the credit automatically.

Can I get a refund for excess Social Security tax withheld?

My Bad.  Silly me. That is unbelievable data entry mistake I have made.  Correcting EIN fixed the issue. Thanks for help. Appreciate it.👍

Maybe one employer also took too much out?  Check boxes 3 & 4 on your W2. Box 4 should be 6.2% of box 3 up to a max of $8,537.40.   So take the amount in box 3 and multiply it by .062. If box 4 is more than that you need to get a corrected W2 from your employer.  But also go back and double check your W2 entries, you may have entered box 3 & 4 wrong.  A lot of people who have asked this found they did enter an amount wrong.

Or check W2 box 12.  You may have entered Code A by mistake.

A sure way to fix this is to delete the W2 and re-enter it.  That may clear something out.

Or post back with the amounts in boxes 3&4.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Here are  the amounts in box 3 and box 4

Employer one w2     15,949.74   and  988.88

Employer two w2   137,700.00   and 8,537.40

The message is same "Request refund 988.88 excess payment from one of the employer"

That should be ok.  Probably just the way the message looks.  Are you getting credit for 988 on your return?  Check 1040 Schedule 3 line 10 for it.  Then Schedule 3 goes to 1040 line 31.

Oh, try leaving the cents off of the 988.  It's rounding it up to 989 and probably saying it's too much for the amount in box 3.

Thanks for quick reply

Section 3 is missing for tax return and 1040 line 31 has empty (black space - no amount ).

Ok are you married?  Are both the W2s for the same spouse?  The max for Social Security is $8,537.40 on $137,700 of wages PER PERSON.  So if the W2s are for different spouses you don't have any excess.   So forget that.  Just delete the cents on the 988 box 4 and see if that clears it.

I have tried everything you have suggested and unfortunately it is not working. I will start creating a brand new return with hope that will resolve it😀

Thank you!!!  I did the exact same thing and this Question/Answer helped me too.  I was sure TT had a software error, but no, it was my bad data entry (I accidentally entered the same employer ID number on two separate W-2s.)
