When trying to claim this credit, TurboTax calculates my personal credit as $0. This is for the personal home use portion. For the general business (for which I use this charger 60% of the time), the software gives me a number I will be credited, but does not add to my refund total.
On top of this, the deduction section "Energy-Efficient Vehicle Charging Station" disappears from the deductions section in the software after I hit "Done" after seeing my credit I will be getting to my refund. The forms are there, but no credits are allocated to the total. Forms 8911, as well as form 3800.
I spoke with someone at TurboTax 2 weeks ago and they told me to wait until 2/12/2025 to get an updated form. It is now 2/17/2025 and it is still not working.
I live in a rural area, and I meet all the criteria to receive this credit. What is going on?

Thank you for providing your token.
Your credit is zero because you have other credits that are already reducing your tax liability to zero.
This particular credit is what's called a nonrefundable credit, which means that it can only lower your tax liability to zero. If your tax liability is zero, it can't increase your refund.
The business portion of your credit should carry forward to next year.
Thank you, is there a way to see that information on my end? I should definitely not be at 0.
To view a preview of your 1040, once you're logged in to your account and on the Tax Home page:
1. Click any of the topics to fully open your return.
2. Once inside, click Tax Tools on the left hand panel (it's toward the bottom, you may have to scroll)
3. Click Tools
4. Click View Tax Summary
5. You'll see a summary of your return and you should see the Total Tax line be 0.
6. To see more detail, click Preview my 1040 on the left hand panel (toward the top)
This view shows a preview of your actual tax return - Form 1040 and Schedules 1-3.
Line 18 shows your tax before credits.
Line 19 shows your child tax credit.
Line 20 shows the amount of other credits already being applied.
To see what those credits are, you can scroll to Schedule 3, Part I.
Thank you, and how do I make sure that the additional credit that isn't counted on this return is carried forward to next year's return?
If you are claiming the EV credit as a business expense it would be carried forward with your unused portion of your business credit. You can verify this in the general business credit reported on form 3800. If you are not filing as a business expense then any unused credit can not be carried forward on a personal return.
