By how much were your medical expenses greater than 7.5% of your AGI?
Yes, your NYS deduction is considered separately from your federal deduction. If your NYS Itemized deduction is greater than your NYS standard deduction, then TurboTax would give you the Itemized deduction for the state without regards to what you took on your federal side.
The NY standard deduction is:
Your itemized expenses including medical expenses in EXCESS of 7.5% of your AGI would need to be greater than your standard deduction above. This means if you have income of $50,000 and medical expenses of $10,000, you would only be able to deduct $6,250 in medical expenses, not the full $10,000. If you do not have other itemized expenses, that add up to more than your standard deduction for NY, then you would not benefit from taking the itemized deduction.
Yes they we're. TT correctly used fed standard deduction. it has all my medical expenses (from fed input), but gave me the NYS standard deduction, which is less than my total medical expenses (or is it just the med amount over 7.5% that is deductible )? thanks very much
actually tt gave me 16,050 standard deduction for married filing joint, not the 17,400. why would that be? thanks
The New York standard deduction for a married-filing joint filer in 2023 is $16,050 per this from the New York Department of Tax and Finance: NY standard deduction
Medical expenses are only deductible on a federal tax return to the extent they are over 7.5% of your adjusted gross income.
