Dependent

As of September 2019 my daughter became a full time doctoral student using federal loans to live independently and go to school. She has no job since starting school but worked from January through August 2019 while living at home with us for those 8 months. Should we claim her as a dependent, or should she file as an independent?

It depends.  You did not indicate how old she was in 2019.  Please see the following rules for dependents:

Sorry... she was 22 in 2019.

If she did not provide more than half of her own support during 2019 and you meet the other requirements, then you can claim her as a dependent. Please view the IRS Worksheet for Determining Support to see if she has provided more than half of her own support.
