Can you deduct travel expenses to care for a parent who had surgery?
Yes, you can if it is recommended by a doctor as part of the patient's treatment. However, meals while away from home overnight for medical care are not deductible.
Please note that you can deduct your parent's medical expenses even if they do not meet the income requirement to be claimed as your dependent as long as you provide more than half of their support.
