Can you claim medical bills you had to pay out of pocket? If I paid rent, does that not apply anymore?

Rent paid is not reported on a federal tax return.  Some states may have this available as a deduction or credit and the TurboTax state program will cover this if available.

Health care insurance premiums, including dental and vision insurance premiums, and other medical expenses that you paid with out of pocket funds and were not reimbursed are an eligible medical expense that you can deduct using Schedule A for itemized deductions. However, only your total medical expenses that are greater than 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) can be deducted. Your total itemized deductions reported on Form 1040 Schedule A must be greater than the standard deduction for your filing status to have any tax benefit.

Standard deductions for 2024

Single - $14,600 add $1,950 if age 65 or older
Married Filing Separately - $14,600 add $1,550 if age 65 or older
Married Filing Jointly - $29,200 add $1,550 for each spouse age 65 or older
Head of Household - $21,900 add $1,950 if age 65 or older

Yes, medical expenses are an itemized deduction.  You can enter the expenses in TurboTax Online here:

  • Navigate to Federal > Deductions & Credits > Medical Expenses > Start or Edit
  • Enter all the expenses you have as you go through the categories
  • On the screen "How much did you spend on insurance premiums?" you can enter the health insurance premiums

Note that in order to claim medical expenses you must itemize deductions and only the expenses over 7.5% of your AGI are deductible.

You don't get a deduction for rent for federal purposes.  You can check with your state's instructions to see if there is a state deduction/ credit available.
