I have two kids, one US born 9 years old daughter and another Canadian 3 yrs old son. We paid for daycare for our little one,but we don't have a US but Canadian SSN for him. Is there a problem using Canadian SSN for claiming childcare tax credits?
We are getting the following message when we file federal tax return:
IND-517-01 - A Dependent SSN in the return must not be the same as the Primary or Spouse SSN on another return where 'PrimaryClaimAsDependentInd' or 'SpouseClaimAsDependentInd' is not checked.
I wonder if this has to do with SSN # or whether one can claim either 'Child and Dependent Care Credit' OR 'Child and Other Dependent Tax Credit' but not both. Please help.

Any dependent on a tax return must have either a US Social Security number or an ITIN issued by the IRS.
The message you are receiving means another tax return has been filed and accepted by the IRS with the same US Social Security number as the Canadian SS number you entered for your child.
How could it be possible? I tried e-filing my return a couple of time, but every time I got a message that it was rejected. Could it be possible that even though I got a rejection message from Turbotax, however the return was still routed and possibly accepted by IRS? Please advise.

The IRS rejected your tax return not TurboTax. The rejection code and message from the IRS were sent to you on the TurboTax email.
If IRS rejected because it's already showing on their system that it was filed earlier, then shouldn't I be able to check the status online on IRS website. I tried putting my personal details on IRS website, but nothing pops up.

The IRS rejected your tax return because someone else filed a tax return with the Social Security number of the child, not your SS number. Since your tax return has not been accepted there will be no refund status for your tax return.
Your child must have either a US Social Security number or an ITIN issued by the IRS so you can e-file your tax return. If you are receiving a tax refund you can just wait and then file your return when the child receives the proper identification number. A 2019 tax return with a tax refund can be filed at any time up through April 15, 2023. TurboTax can be used to e-file a 2019 tax return up through October 15, 2020.
Or you can remove the child as a dependent and e-file your tax return. Then when the child receives the SS number or ITIN, you can file an amended tax return and add the child as your dependent.
Since the return didn't go through, can put in a request for extension to submit my return through turbotax?

The TurboTax Easy extension for e-filing an extension request will be available in mid-March.
