Normally if your ONLY income is SS benefits then you have no reason to file a tax return but things are NOT normal right now. If you did not get the first 2 stimulus checks for all qualifying dependents in advance then you must file a 2020 return to get that credit. Then you will file a 2021 return to get any missing third stimulus payments you didn't get in advance PLUS the refundable CTC that is being allowed for 2021 ONLY (or until congress changes their minds again).
CTC = Child Tax credit, including the refundable portion known as the Additional Child Tac Credit, which is claimed on a different line on tax form 1040.
What is you living situation and who has been claiming the child in the past? A child can be the “qualifying child” dependent of any close relative in the household. If you live with someone else, e.g. your parents, it may be better if they claim your child.
Instead, you could allow the non-custodial parent to claim the children. Non-custodial parents are allowed to claim the child tax credit, but not the Earned income credit.
