Can i deduct registration fees for the same car from two different states

The total amount of your registration fee is not deductible, just the portion that the state charged you for taxes based on the value of your vehicle. If you need help finding this on your bill, contact your state's Department of Motor Vehicles.

If you paid registration fees in two states that charge a tax based on the vehicle's value, you can claim the deductible portion of each fee. However, to deduct the value-based portion of your registration fee, you must itemize your deductions using federal Schedule A

To input these amounts in TurboTax (Deluxe): 

  1. Click the Federal Taxes tab
  2. Click Deductions & Credits 
  3. Scroll down to the Cars and Other Things You Own section
  4. Click Start or Revisit next to Car Registration Fees (see attachment for reference)
Note: To deduct the value-based portion of your registration fee, you must itemize your deductions using federal Schedule A
