Can I deduct my property taxes this year if paid in January?

Our property tax bill was sent to our mortgage lender when it should have been sent to us since we have no escrow. Because of the delay we paid our property taxes for 2016 in January (without penalty). Can we still deduct them on our taxes for 2016 or do I have to wait till next years taxes?

You can only claim property taxes in the year they are actually paid, so you will claim them on your 2017 tax return.
