Can I deduct my co-pays and mileage to Drs?

I was in another state (traveling cross-country) and I want to know if the mileage to get to my Drs for treatment  of ongoing medical issues is deductable? Also now that I am settled and have new Drs locally, is mileage back and forth as well as copays deductable?

Can I deduct my co-pays and mileage to Drs?

Yes, mileage is deductible at 22 cents per mile for medical appointments and treatment for both your distance travel and local travel.  Co-pays are also deductible.  In order to claim the miles, and other medical expenses, your total medical expenses would need to be greater than 7.5% of your AGI and then only the amount that is greater than 7.5% are deductible.  This means, if you have an AGI of $50,000, then only the expenses greater than $3,750 would be deductible IF you itemize your return. So, if your total medical expenses were $4,000, you would only have a deduction of $250 to apply to your itemized deductions.

In order to Itemize your return, your total itemized expenses need to be greater than your standard deduction. If you are single your standard deduction is $12,950. Your other itemized expenses include mortgage interest, state and local taxes up to $10,000 and charitable contributions.

All of these expenses would be entered in the Federal Credits and Deductions section.  It is best to walk through step by step, so TurboTax can help you get all the Credits and Deductions you are eligible for.

You can enter co-pays you paid your self and you can enter mileage for going to medical appointments, procedures, etc.

When you enter medical expenses in TurboTax, it asks you a whole lot of questions to help you include everything that can be entered.  Really what matters in the end is the total of all of it; that is what will go on your tax form, so don't get too frazzled trying to make sure everything is in the "right" category as long as you enter it all, and do not enter anything twice.

MEDICAL EXPENSES

The medical expense deduction has to meet a rather large threshold before it can affect your return. The amount of medical (including dental, vision, etc.)  expenses that will count toward itemization is the amount that is OVER 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. You should only enter the amount that you paid in 2022—do not include any amounts that were covered by insurance or that are still outstanding.  Of course, your medical expenses plus your other itemized deductions still have to exceed your standard deduction before you will see a difference in your tax due or refund.

To enter your medical expenses go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Medical>Medical Expenses

2022 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS

SINGLE $12,950  (65 or older + $1750)

MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $12,950  (65 or older + $1750)

MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $25,900  (65 or older + $1400 per spouse)

HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD  $19,400  (65 or older +$1750)

Legally Blind + $1750
