The cost of eyeglasses needed for medical reasons is deductible as a medical expense. Poor vision is a medical reason. However, only medical expenses in excess of 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) are deductible. (Enter the full amount that you paid in TurboTax. TurboTax will subtract 7.5% of your AGI.) In addition, medical expenses are an itemized deduction. They will not reduce your tax or increase your refund unless your total itemized deductions are more than your standard deduction.
Eyeglasses
You can include in medical expenses amounts you pay for eyeglasses and contact lenses needed for medical reasons.
Your question was posted from the Free Edition, which does not support itemizing deductions. Unless you are going to have enough other itemized deductions to exceed your standard deduction--like mortgage interest, property tax paid, etc. the cost of glasses or contacts is not going to have any effect on your tax due or refund. But entering it will trigger upgrading to a paid version. Do you want/need to itemize?
MEDICAL EXPENSES
The medical expense deduction has to meet a rather large threshold before it can affect your return. The amount of medical (including dental, vision, etc.) expenses that will count toward itemization is the amount that is OVER 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. You should only enter the amount that you paid in 2023—do not include any amounts that were covered by insurance or that are still outstanding. Of course, your medical expenses plus your other itemized deductions still have to exceed your standard deduction before you will see a difference in your tax due or refund.
To enter your medical expenses go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Medical>Medical Expenses
