The IRS only allows you to deduct the cost of diapers if you are doing so to relieve the effects of a particular disease. There is no requirement for having a written prescription. If the doctor has recommended the diapers for a disease that has caused her incontinence, then this out-of-pocket expense is deductible. Please view this IRS link for more information.
Note: You will need to itemize deductions to claim medical expenses.
You would be on firmer ground to deduct that cost with documentation from the doctor that they are needed for treatment of a medical condition. The expenses would be an itemized medical deduction but you can only deduct an amount greater than 7.5% of AGI.
