$7500 Federal EV Tax Credit for 2024

My tax return was rejected solely because the dealership where I purchased EV did not enter VIN into IRS database. I meet income requirements and my 2023 Bolt EV purchased on 1/1/2024 is eligible for the $7500 tax credit. Error codes and messages are below.

SA-F8936-048 - The e-File database indicates this vehicle was not purchased during the tax period of the return.

SA-F8936-047 - Schedule A (Form 8936) credit amount does not match the type of credit reported in e-File database.

$7500 Federal EV Tax Credit for 2024

It sounds like you're facing an issue with your tax return being rejected due to errors related to the VIN of your electric vehicle. Since you have confirmed you meet the income requirements and your 2023 Bolt EV purchased on January 1, 2024, is eligible for the $7,500 Federal EV Tax Credit, let's go through the steps to below to you successfully claim your credit.

  1. Reach out to the dealership where you purchased your EV and ask them to verify that they have correctly submitted the VIN to the IRS database. Sometimes, errors can occur during this process
  2. Double-check the VIN you entered on your tax return to ensure it matches the VIN on your vehicle and the documentation provided by the dealership
  3. Once the dealership confirms that the VIN was submitted correctly, you may need to correct and refile your tax return, including Form 8936. TurboTax can help see steps here to refile after corrections are made.
    1. Steps to Refile
      1. Sign in to TurboTax.
      2. Select Fix my return to see your rejection code and explanation.
      3. Select Fix it now and follow the instructions to update the info causing the reject.
      4. Once you've fixed the error, select File and follow the instructions to either e-file or file by mail.
  4. If the issue persists, consider filing your tax return by mail. Attach a copy of the VIN documentation provided by the dealership. This can help resolve discrepancies that might be causing the rejection

$7500 Federal EV Tax Credit for 2024

Thanks for reply.  I verified VIV and resubmitted and was rejected again,  I did reach out to dealer and they tried to enter VIN, but it was rejected. The error message said sale date could be no more than 5 days prior and my sle was over 13 months ago.  I think they had no idea entering on IRS portal was required for buyers claiming later on their personal tax return. In fact, that is how I claimed on my previous EV purchase back in 2018.

i guess I could paper file, but there is no guarantee it won’t be rejected again.  I’m worried I will have to sue the dealer for the money. Thanks again.
