23-year old dependent, full-time student & 1098-T. WHO REPORS IT?

Dependent child did not work in 2024. Received a 1098-T:

box 1: $6,900 payment for tuition

box 5: $8,200 Scholarship/grant

Does dependent child need to file taxes? Do I need to include the 1098-T in my taxes? or it does not need to be reported. Dependent child had no reportable income in 2024.

This forum rocks! THANKS!

Since your child is your dependent, you will enter the 1098-T on your tax return. Some of the scholarship/grant  (box 5) may be taxable since it's more than the tuition  (box 1) depending on what the scholarship/grant was used for. TurboTax will guide you through the interview process to enter your dependent's education expenses.

Refer to the TurboTax Help articles Where do I enter Form 1098-T (Tuition Statement)?, Guide to Tax Form 1098-T: Tuition Statement and What Are Education Tax Credits? For additional information.
