2019 HSA excess contribution

Hello,

I and my wife made HSA contributions for 2019.  My employment changed and we ended up making excess contribution at family level.

Turbox Tax recommends different amounts be withdrawn depending on who I select as the person responsible for excess contribution.

These are the HSA contributions reported on W2 ( W on Box 12)

me - 125.00

me - 525.00

wife - 7000.00

If I select my name as responsible for excess, Turbox Tax recommends $650 withdrawal before April 15. If I select spouse - TurbTax suggests - 2* 650 to be withdrawn from HSA.

We both had HD plans. Spouse had children under her plan. I had my individual HD plan. But the excess should be $650.00  - correct?

Thanks.

First, let me clarify one thing. Are you saying that you had two W-2s, each with a code W in box 12 (one $125 and one $525)?

Are you using the Online product? The CD/download product does not behave in the way you described. Yes, you are correct that the excess should be $650, and either one of you can withdraw that, or you can split the excess.

Yes. I had two W2 as you stated.

I am using turn Tax CD for Mac and it is up to date on patches.

Thanks,

So let me make sure that I understand, when you agree to withdraw the excess, TurboTax tells you $650, but when your spouse agrees to withdraw the excess, TurboTax tells you $1,300?

Well, the answer is $650, so if you want to withdraw it from your accounts, you can do that. But if you want to withdraw it from your spouse's account, since I don't have a Mac and can't reproduce this, I'll ask you to contact phone support so that they can see it and report it.

Please see this TurboTax FAQ for how to contact TurboTax.
