When I look at my 2018 return, Line 8 has an amount about ten percent than the "standard deduction". however there isn't a Schedule A. Furthermore, I recall having opted for the standard deduction as it was higher than itemizing. Wgat causes line 8 to be higher than the $24,000?

Were you age 65 or older in 2018?  If so, there is an additional amount entered for the Standard Deduction based on your filing status.

Standard deductions for 2018

  • Single - $12,000 add $1,600 if age 65 or older
  • Married Filing Separately - $12,000 add $1,300 if age 65 or older
  • Married Filing Jointly - $24,000 add $1,300 for each spouse age 65 or older
  • Head of Household - $18,000 add $1,600 if age 65 or older

Thank you!

That is so simple, and obvious in retrospect. You'd think TurboTax would tell you about the "over 65" supplemental deduction.
