1095-a if dependent has own insurance later in 2024

We use marketplace insurance with a advanced tax credit for myself, spouse and dependent son.  It was only for April until end of year, however the son got a job that provided insurance thus we had him removed after a few months.  Thus, our tax credit advance was lowered.

We received 2 1095-A forms from Washington state.  One had myself and spouse and included columns A, B, and C amounts.  The second one was in my son's name and only had amounts in columns A and B.  Zero in C.

I have read whereas I enter 2 separate line items for each form using the same account number, which Turbotax software does not like.  Then there are the 3 boxes for each item.  I assume I would check box 2 on which form (1 or 2)  then it would ask my son's MAGI.  He was a student with zero income until November where he had his own insurance and an income.  Am I expected to include his income when he was not using marketplace insurance, to my income?  If so, that makes zero sense to me.  Or do I exclude the income when he began working and was off the marketplace insurance?

Thanks for your advice

Since you are not claiming the son on your tax return the 1095-A goes entirely on his return.  Since there is no amount in box C this should be no big deal either way..  But enter his 1095-A on his tax return.

I am claiming my son.  He just got his own insurance and a job at the end of the year.  He was a student.

If you are claiming your son, then yes, you would need to include his income where it asks for your dependents income.  This is because it is based on household income, not just the income of those who are covered.

Whose income to include in your estimate

For most people, a household consists of:

  • The tax filer
  • Their spouse if they have one
  • Their tax dependents, including those who don’t need coverage

The Marketplace counts estimated income of all household members. Learn more about who’s counted in a Marketplace household.

You will also need to combine the 1095-A forms on your form 8962.  His health care costs for the year if he is your dependent are assumed to be your responsibility and reimbursements are based on household income.  Add the amounts on the separate 1095-A forms together and enter them into the return.
