That didn't work.
It does seem to go through without getting caught in the loop, if you choose the option to pay for the TurboMax premiere . Hmmm
that did not work
The Mac users solution worked for me.
Please follow the steps for Online or Desktop.
TurboTax ONLINE
Click Tax Tools on the left side bar
Click Tools from the drop-down
Click the "Topic Search" box on the screen
Type or scroll down to standard deduction and exemptions
Click GO
The next screen gives you an option to change your selection from Standard to Itemized and back. You do not need to change your selection
Scroll down to the bottom of that screen and click CONTINUE
The next screen is the Charitable Cash Contributions under Cares Act screen
IF YOU ARE CLAIMING STANDARD DEDUCTION enter the amount of cash contributions you made, up to 300
IF YOU ARE ITEMIZING DEDUCTIONS enter 0
Scroll down and click Continue
Click Continue on the next screen
DESKTOP
Go to Step-By-Step input
Click Federal
Click Deductions & Credits along the top
Click “I’ll choose what I work on”
Edit or Update Donations to Charity in 2020 if needed, then click “Done with Charitable Donations”
Scroll down the “Your 2020 Deductions & Credits” screen and click “Done with Deductions”
Click Continue on the “Let’s Check Your Deductions and Credits” screen
Continue through the following interview questions until you get to the “Here Are Your 2020 Deductions & Credits” screen
Click Continue
If the next screen says “The Standard deduction is Right for You!” click Continue
ON THE NEXT SCREEN enter the cash contribution (up to 300) made in 2020 and click Continue
Your 1040 should update
“The new "up to $300 above the line cash charity donation" is available for tax year 2020. This allows a Taxpayer to claim up to a $300 credit which is subtracted from income on the 1040 line 10c if the Taxpayer is claiming the Standard Deduction. (If you Itemize Deductions, all your donations will be listed on Schedule A.) “
@Anonymous
I entered 300 in the box, which is the max contribution allowed if taking standard deduction. Guess what... ,if worked. I initially entered, 0, and had the same response as everyone else. Then I entered 12, still didn't work. Then I entered 300, and it accepted that.
NOTHING WORKS!!!
This js the last year I use TurboTax. You guys screwed up my return last year and are doing it again. this year.
If this is a known bug, fix it, and send me the updated file so I can submit my taxes.
I tried putting 300 in the box, and that worked. Thank you to the above user. This is using desktop version....
I was able to fix it by deleting the amount in both fields (leaving both fields blank). In my case, I was not taking the standardized deduction, but for some reason "300" was in there and it needed to be removed from both the top form field and the field that displayed number in the 1040/1040SR Wks form.
I have same problem. “1040/1040SR Wks: Charitable contributions: Charitable contributions must be entered.” I have put in charitable amount. Also put a zero. And tried leaving blank. It’s not allowing me to send in taxes. Frustrating!
I took out two charity names that I donated in 2019 but not in 2020. I was able to submit taxes. Yeah!
Yes!! Removing Charities to which I contributed in 2019 ,but not in 2020 overcame the problem.
This "bug" in TurboTax just cost me about $1000. I am so frustrated with TurboTax. I strongly suspect this will be my last year using this software. It becomes increasingly unworkable year after year.

Yep, I gave up on itemizing this year after following the instructions in this thread for 20 minutes. The sub $100 savings wasn't worth the aggravation. Thanks for nothing TurboTax. Keep lobbying to prevent simplifying the tax system.
I tried 300 and that's not working.
This is a known bug and has been reported. Remove the amount as requested.
Go to the Charitable Donations section under Deductions & Credits to enter the $300 cash donation. This will correct the problem.
To enter charitable donations -
Or enter charitable donation in the Search box located in the upper right of the online program screen. Click on Jump to charitable donation
The additional $300 cash charity deduction, once entered correctly, will display on Form 1040 line 10b as an adjustment to income
