Work in NY but lived in NJ. Possible wrong info on W-2

Hi, I'm trying to do my return using TT premier but it's showing a ridiculous amount of money owed in both states. I'm probably doing something wrong since this is my first time doing two state returns.

I received multiple state W-2s from my employer and it looks like it has some wrong information in it.

These are the W2s I received:

NJ W-2 shows: (worked in NJ during whole months of January and Feb and lived in NJ)

- Box 16: What I made last year plus some (I believe it's for the paid health plan cost).

- Box 17: State tax collected

NY W-2 shows - (Worked in NYC for the rest of the year and lived in NJ)

- Box 16: What I made last year which is same amount as box 1

- Box 17: State tax collected

Another W-2 shows:

- Employer's state ID non box = 'TOTAL STATE'

- box 17: Total tax I paid between NJ and NY (sum of NJ box 17 and NY box 17)

I saw something online saying that the amount on box 16 between the NY and NJ W2s should equal to what I made last year and this is not what the W2 is saying. It seems like that W2 is saying that I made twice as much (wish I did lol).

I'm gonna talk to payroll dept regarding this but just wanted some info before I do.

Thanks for the help!

NY and NJ are going to tax your income.

NJ gives you a credit for the NY tax paid, up to the amount of NJ tax.

For this reason, do your NY tax return first so you can get the credit.
