Ask for my son. He worked from home for all of 2023 in SC for a company based out of TX. When they sent him his W2 the state on it said TX. Is this correct or does his employer need to fix this? I always thought it was the state in which you lived. Now we are not sure if he pays taxes in SC or TX. Please help him. Thank you.

No. It doesn't matter where the W2 originated from. He would pay taxes in his own state regardless what state the W2 is issued from.
Even if the state listed in the state section of the w2 is not the state he lives in?
Even if the employer was in TX, your son lived and worked in SC and needs to file a SC tax return. TX has no state income tax. It sounds like no SC tax was withheld, which will mean he owes tax to SC now. Going forward, he could ask the employer to withhold for SC--but they may not be able to do that for him. He could also start making estimated quarterly payments to the state of SC to avoid a big tax bill next year.
