WI State refund won't efile due to override

I get the Veterans property tax credit (line 34), therefore I cannot receive the $300 school property tax credit (line 16b part 2). TT insists in entering the school credit, so I overrode it and entered 0 on the form. I tried removing the the property taxes paid in the interview and only entering the veterans credit, but it auto-populated Line 16b part 1 & 2 when I did so. I also cannot override 16b part 1 in hopes that it wouldn't calculate the school credit.

Now TT won't efile because it gives me a warning that I shouldn't override. Despite saying, "You shouldn't," TT is making it an absolute when I decline to remove the override so that my taxes are correct. It just gets into a loop of warning me to change it. If I cancel the override, it gives me the $300 credit, which isn't right.

My only option is to change filing method and I'd really like to efile instead of sending in paper. I understand getting a warning. I do not understand it not letting me efile. I have already paid for the efile because it didn't tell me this until after I paid.

If you'd like, we can look at your return and see exactly what you see to  help come to a resolution. The return will be scrubbed and won't include any of your personal details.

If you're using TurboTax Online:

Once you're logged in to your account,

- on the left hand panel, click on Tax Tools and then choose Tools

- on the pop up window, select Share my file with Agent

- you'll see a message saying you'll give us a copy of your tax return. Your personal information will be changed so we can't see any private information.

- click okay and you'll get another message with a token

If you're using TurboTax Desktop:

  • Click on Online in the top menu of TurboTax Desktop for Windows
  • Select Send Tax File to Agent
  • Write down or take a screenshot of your token number

Please reply to this message with your token so that we can further assist you. Let us know all the states, if any, that are included on the return.

My token is 597 1787 - 463 95469. The problem is with the Wisconsin return. It will not efile if I override the school property tax credit. However, I cannot legally take the school property tax credit because I am taking the Veterans Property Tax Credit.

Thank you!

Thank you for sending over your token.

I was able to get the credits to show up properly on your return with these steps:

1. Make sure your TurboTax software is up to date.

2. On WI Form 1, remove the override on line 16.

3. Remove the veteran's property tax credit on line 34.

4. Back in the Step-by-step state tax section, click Edit next to WI, and then Start or Edit next to Credits and taxes

4. Continue through the screens until you see a summary of the credits

5. Click Start or Edit next to Veterans and Surviving Spouse Property Tax Credit (it should be zero now since you deleted it on the form)

6. Answer the questions on the screens and add your property tax back

Your form should update with the correct property tax credit.

Thank you! I had to do it twice to get it to work. Started a message that it didn't work and decided to try the steps again just in case. Woohoo! Second time (or well, probably 15th time) is a charm!
