Why does it keep saying I am a part-year resident?

TurboTax identifies you as a part-year resident based on the information you entered in your Personal Info (Federal) profile or if you have multiple state returns in your account.

Common Reasons for This Status

  • The "Lived in Another State" Box is Checked: In the My Info or Personal Info section, there is a box that asks if you "lived in another state" during the year. If this is checked, TurboTax automatically triggers a part-year resident status for the states involved.
  • W-2 State Coding: If a W-2 has multiple states listed in Box 15, the software may assume you moved between those states during the year.
  • Data Carryover: If you indicated you lived in another state last year, that information may have transferred over into your current return.

How to Fix the Residency Status

Update Personal Info:

  • Go to My Info (or Personal Info) on the left menu.
  • Click Edit next to your name.
  • Find the question "Tell us the state(s) you lived in".
  • Ensure your Resident State as of December 31 is correct and uncheck the box for "I lived in another state" if it does not apply.

Delete the State Return: Sometimes changes in the Personal Info section do not fully update the state return.

  • Go to State Taxes > Your State Returns.
  • Click the trash can icon to delete the state return that is showing the wrong status.
  • Restart the state interview; the software will pull the updated (correct) info from your Personal Info section.

Clear Browser Cache: If the status persists after you've made changes, log out, clear your browser's cache and cookies, and log back in.

OK, tell us where it says that you are a part-year resident. On the federal return? on a state return? in the Review?

When I am reviewing the state return.

The review should allow you to scroll and change residency options. If not, edit the state. As you go through the state return, it should ask if you need to change from part-year to resident at the beginning and usually allows you to go through general information at the end as well.  Which state?

If you are using desktop, switch to Forms mode and locate the state worksheet, change the residency.

If you need extra time, filing an extension by April 15, 2026, moves your submission deadline to October 15. But remember any taxes owed are still due in full by the original April 15 date.  Pay through either Direct Pay or your individual online account. See if you need to file a state extension.
