@ErnieS0 Thank you! Could you guide where in TurboTax do I need to go to change this amount? ( By the way the NJ tax has already been calculated by TT as 5138, its the NY resident credit that has 5401 which seems to be not based on anything ...) so how do I change this credit amount to 5138?
Here’s how to change the other state tax credit
@ErnieS0 Thank you!
Same issue here - same states even! can you please review my data and help?
Token is 1127797
Thanks in advance!
New York only allows you to claim the amount of tax paid New Jersey as a credit. TurboTax computed this to be $780.
Dependent care
The IRS allows you to claim two or more dependents for the child and dependent care credit even if you only paid expenses for one child. This will double your credit.
The IRS says:
The maximum amount of work-related expenses you can take into account for purposes of the credit is $6,000 if you have two or more qualifying persons even if you only incurred expenses for just one of them. For example, if you have two qualifying children, one age 3 and one age 11, and you incur $6,000 of qualifying work-related expenses for the 3-year-old, and no qualifying work-related expenses for the 11-year-old, you can use $6,000, to figure the credit. In this situation, you should list $6,000 for the 3-year-old child and -0- for the 11-year-old child. The $6,000 limit would be used to compute your credit unless you have already excluded or deducted dependent care benefits paid to you (or on your behalf) by your employer.
See Dollar Limit.
Hello
I live in NY but worked in NJ. "Tax computed on Your NJ return" showed $3,205.00 and when I went to the next page, "Enter New Jersey Information" page is now showing $3,880 as NJ tax paid by me. Am I supposed to change this number to $3,205.00? (when I did, my tax refund went to almost zero) Please advise.
for the above question, Token number is 1130929
Thank you
If TurboTax computes your NJ liability as $3,205 then change the tax paid to NJ to that number.
Your tax refund would go down by $675 because instead of getting a credit for $3,880 of tax, you are only getting a credit for $3,205 against your New York tax liability.
@ErnieS0 Thank you.
But I wonder why turbotax once calculated total tax for NJ as $3,205.00, but when I went to the next page, it was showing a different number in the box, "NJ tax paid by you" as $3,808.00.
(Token number: 1130929)
The New Jersey tax liability on your NJ nonresident return is $3,205 so that’s the number to use as tax paid to NJ on New York Form IT-112-R.
Your tax credit to New York requires an adjustment because your NJ wages are higher than your NY wage due to differences in the way each state taxes income.
NY doesn’t give you credit for the additional amount taxed by NJ for the same job. Generally, this happens because NJ taxes some retirement plans that NY does not.
For example, if your NJ wage is $60,000 and your NY wage $50,000, you can only claim credit for tax paid on $50,000 of your $60,000 of NJ wages, because NY is only taxing $50,000 on the NY return.
Hi guys!
I'm having the same issue again this year, income in NJ & lived in NY:
it-112-r (NJ): Tax Amount - TP should not be greater than the tax imposed by the other state.
Tax Amount - TP: [cell to input new lower dollar amount]
My token is: 1134856
Can you please help me out? Last year the amount on this and the following page needed to be changed, thank you so much I appreciate it!! @LenaH @ErnieS0
