It depends. If you are a full year Kansas resident for 2019 and did not earn money anywhere else, there should be nothing in your return related to Nebraska and Line 13 would remain blank.
2019 Kansas Form K-40 Instructions:
LINE 13 (Credit for taxes paid to other states): If you paid income tax to another state, you may be eligible for a credit against your Kansas tax liability. If you had income from a state that has no state income tax, make no entry on line 13.
If you are eligible for a tax credit paid to another state, the credit amount cannot exceed the tax liability shown on the other state’s tax return and the income derived from the other state must be included in your Kansas adjusted gross income (KAGI), line 3 of Form K-40. The tax liability is NOT the amount of tax withheld for the other state.
Important—To receive a credit for taxes paid to another state, you must enclose a copy of the other state(s) tax return and supporting schedules with Form K-40.
Copies of the other state’s W-2 forms are NOT acceptable.
For 2020, if income was earned from Kansas and Nebraska, then a part-year resident return should be filed for Kansas and Nebraska. How do I file a part-year resident return?
Thank you for the prompt response! To make things clearer, this is what I get:
I don't know what to select. Line 13 on my last K-40 is 0.
Yes, that helps clarify the situation! Have you identified here that this worksheet is coming from Nebraska? From the screenshot sent, this would be above Form K-40 in the box showing "(No entry)" and should be available to select by clicking the drop down arrow.
I apologize for the delayed response. To notify me immediately of your reply, please tag me at the end of your post by using "@" with my screen name.
Apologies for prolonging this, so in essence in the box saying "(No entry)" , should I choose anything or just leave it as it is and tell TurboTax to ignore this fix, cause this is the final suggested fix on my KS state returns.
Also, I didn't know this worksheet came from NE. I didn't have anything whatsoever to do with NE in the year 2019, in terms of anything tax related. @KathrynG3
No, I don't recommend ignoring the fix if possible. My apologies, I misspoke. Since Nebraska has nothing to do with 2019 except for your address for filing, then this entry should technically be ignored. The directions from 2019 KS-40 Instructions, page 7 for line 13 would allow for no entry when it is not applicable.
Nebraska should not be entered in the state section of TurboTax.
Thank you so much for you help so far! I was not able to get back to this for some time and now I have some time on my hands. So to wrap up, from my understanding, if I don't select anything from both of these drop downs, it amounts to me 'ignoring the fix'. I can't find KS on either of these, but as you have mentioned, I should not input NE on either of these because NE has not relations to 2019. In this case I am in a 'catch-22'. What should I do? Also, apologies for prolonging this. I am just nervous about getting this wrong. Thanks in advance again!
Why am I being asked about this? I have only lived in KS
