Applying your state tax refund to 2021 will help to reduce your estimated tax payments if applicable. This can be entered in your federal section of the return.

Here's how to apply your state refund to next year:

  1. When you’re going through your state return, after you’ve dealt with any additional entries or adjustments for income and credits and taxes, you’ll reach a screen titled “A few things before we wrap you your state taxes”.
  2.  Scroll down to Other tax forms and click start/revisit across from Make Estimated Payments for Next Year.
  3. Say “YES” that you want to start the state estimated taxes section now
  4. Make entries on the next few screens as appropriate.
  5. You must go through the process to generate estimated payment vouchers in order to apply the refund to the estimates.

I may vary a little bit by state, but in general:

You'll find that, in the state (not federal) program on the screen titled "A few things before we wrap up your state taxes".
