The taxable income on my federal form is 0, because line 42 is larger than line 41. On my state return it shows the negative number. Is this correct and is it a problem?

It should not be a problem. I knew the 1040 would not display a negative number in Line 43, taxable Income. The states have their own way of doing these things.
