The error of W-2 forms

Hi Everybody,

I received one W-2 form from California for 2022 tax year and one W-2 form from Utah for 2022 tax year.  However, I only worked in Utah for the whole year of 2022.  I did not live or worked in California at all for the 2022 year.  For both W-2 forms from California and Utah, the only differences are box 15 (State and Employer’s state ID no.) and box 17 (State income tax).  In other words, I need to pay double tax even though I only worked in Utah for the whole year of 2022.  I contacted the payroll of my company, but I still do not get the answer for past 3 weeks.  Should I contact the IRS to get the corrected W-2 form prior to finish my 2022 tax year by the deadline of April 18, 2023.  Also, if I have to file the tax to avoid the deadline of April 18, 2023, how do I fill out Turbotax with these two forms in details?  Is it the right thing to do?  What is the best way to fix the error of W-2 forms?

If you received a W2 with California withholding, you can file a nonresident California tax return and report zero California wages and you will get that withholding refunded.  There is no need to contact the IRS- they will not intervene on the state withholding.  Simply file the nonresident California return and make sure your employer knows you live and work in Utah only.
