My son worked in Chicago for a California company in 2022. He spent all of 2022 in Illinois. CA withheld $821 in taxes. I prepared a non resident tax return for him in CA and a resident tax return for him in IL TT says he gets $252 back from CA. Is the rest ($569) credited towards his IL state taxes?

You prepared the state tax returns correctly for your son who lives in IL and worked remotely for a company in CA. All of his income should be allocated to IL which is why he is getting a refund from CA and a credit for the taxes paid to CA on his IL state tax return.

Thanks for the quick response but I’m still stuck bc I am at the finish stage and payment is being requested. So not sure if I continue and state form has been finalized when would I be able to add the renters credit don’t want to lose out on it?
For your CA state tax return you will be prompted to enter your rent info when you complete your state return. If your state return is done but not filed you can still go back in and enter it. You will just go through the Review process again.
In the California interview, look for the section called Renter's Credit. TurboTax will ask you the qualifying questions, determine if you qualify, and calculate the credit for you.
Then continue on and finalize your state return again.
