State Taxes not being accepted

We filed jointly I am from Alabama and my husband is from Texas. We are both in the military and were able to send our Federal taxes but our state taxes are not being accepted for some reason. We have tried many things to fix it but it is not going through. We need help in order to submit our state taxes.

If you would clarify what error message you are seeing someone may be able to provide a response specific to your situation.

Generally, Alabama does allow you to file a federal joint return and separate state returns.  Likely, however, once you e-file the joint federal return, AL will try to match all the income from your joint return to AL state income which will error if you are only showing AL income.

You will likely need to print and mail in the separate AL return.

State Taxes not being accepted

The email we got sent is

"AL40-050 - This return could not be processed for electronic filing by the state. Alabama Department of Revenue has returned the file with the following message: Total Alabama Wages, Form 40 Pg. 1 line 5, must be equal the amount of all State wages (including Wages Earned Out of State) as reported in Box 16 of the Federal W-2. Note: +/- $3.00 variance allowance has been added to allow for rounding errors."

Your military pay is not taxable in AL or TX but the program is trying to add up all the state wages and is missing the TX income.

You need to go back to the federal section, go into the w2 section.

  1. Edit military w2
  2. Enter TX as the state,
  3. enter the federal ID in place of the state ID (since TX does not have one for you),
  4. enter the box1 wages as state wages.

The program is now able to add the state wages.

Thank you for your service!
