state tax

I'm filing taxes for my daughter.  She worked while attending school in Ohio, but her residence was in KY.  I'm trying to file OH state taxes, but IA is showing up in the state tax window instead of OH!

There are a few places you need to check to make sure you entered OH instead of IA.

  1. On the left side navigation screen, select My Info.
  2. On the Personal info summary screen, scroll down to Other state income, Edit and scroll down to OH.

  1. On the left side navigation screen, select Federal
  2. On the top tab, select Wages & Income and scroll down to Job (W-2) and Review the W-2.
  3. On the OK, let's update the info we have for you and your employer screen, scroll down and Continue.
  4. On the Now let's update the rest screen, scroll down to Box 15 and make sure OH is entered.
  5. Also, make sure you don't have an entry under Local Taxes unless there is a state on her W-2 and Continue.

  1. Next, on the left side navigation screen, select State.
  2. Continue until you get to the Status of your state returns screen.
  3. OH should be listed.
  4. If you see IA, click on the trash can to delete it.
  5. Continue with the onscreen interview until complete.

Also, KY and OH have tax reciprocity.  A resident of KY is not subject to OH income tax on their wage or salary (W-2) income.

Your daughter need not file an OH tax return unless OH taxes were mistakenly withheld from her pay and she wishes for them to be refunded.

She should submit Ohio Form IT-4NR to any Ohio employer, to prevent OH withholding.  Here's a link to that form:

https://tax.ohio.gov/static/forms/employer_withholding/generic/wth_it4nr.pdf

Her income is entirely taxable by her home state of KY, regardless of where earned.

From the Ohio tax website:

"A resident of Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Pennsylvania or West Virginia who had Ohio state income tax erroneously withheld from their wages during the preceding calendar year can file an Ohio IT 1040 to request their refund.

The reciprocity wages earned in Ohio should be deducted on line 12 of the Schedule A of the Ohio IT1040, then carry over the total Schedule A deductions to line 2b on the IT1040.  Please note: line 38 of Schedule A should match line 2b of the IT1040).  Please include a copy of the Schedule A with your return.

Additionally note that individuals claiming refunds due to Ohio tax withholding on reciprocity wages should not file the Ohio IT AR, Application for Personal Income Tax Refund, but should file the Ohio IT 1040 as indicated above."
