The state ID would be the two-letter abbreviation for the state in which you are claiming the interest income.

I tried that and it and the screen just kept popping up.  I even deleted the upload and reuploaded it.  I was told it was a Turbo Tax glitch?

Schedule B-Form 1099-OID that I uploaded from Edward Jones ask for Tax exempt interest, state ID should have a value for Edward Jones. Tax Exempt Int State ID _______

It wants a value.  Isn't a value usually a number?

It's not clear if this is a federal or state section error.  Please clarify the location of the error.

Tax exempt interest can be derived from several different states and Edward Jones can supply a statement so that you know exactly how much should be exempt from your state. The information usually shows the percentage that is exempt for your state.

In other words if not all of the interest is earned from your state or municipalities, then some of that interest is taxable on your state return. The question may be asking this information, either the amount that should be exempt or the amount that should be taxable if the error refers to the state return.

Please update with additional questions and clarification if necessary.

I have this exact problem now, and have looked everywhere for some kind of answer. At least I found this, someone who had the same question! Unfortunately no answer was given, so I'm replying to this old thread hoping Diane will get back to me.

If you have exempt interest dividends on your Form 1099-DIV or Form 1099-OID, then some of those dividends are likely not taxable to your state.  You need to know form your broker what that percentage is.  Once you have the percentage you can enter that amount so that TurboTax can carry that information and keep that amount tax free to your home state return.

See an example below where a 1099-OID has a Tax Exempt OID in Box 11 and the screen that follows to allow your entry for your resident state. There will be similar screens for 1099-DIV.  If you imported you can select the correct item to edit.

Be sure to check the box 'I earned tax exempt OID in more than one state'.

Please update with more clarification if you need further assistance.

Schedule B-Form 1099-OID that I uploaded from Edward Jones ask for Tax exempt interest, state ID should have a value for Edward Jones. Tax Exempt Int State ID _______

This is referencing my tax exempt INTEREST (not dividends).  I divided out the Idaho (my state) tax exempt interest as shown on my 1099-INT details, with the balance under "More than one state."

The Idaho portion of this tax-exempt interest has no OID; all OID is with other states, which I also indicated.

The error reads --

Check This Entry

Schedule B -- Form 1099-OID (VANGUARD...):

Tax exempt interest, state ID should have a value for VANGUARD...

Tax Exempt Int State ID  (blue box)

The box will not accept more than 2 digits.

The word "value" would indicate a number, but it will not accept 0 or 00.

Actually I believe I fixed the problem. I found where I could add the state ID (FL, NJ, OH... which must be what TT means by "value") on each of the individual OID entries.

Under Interest and Dividends, go to "1099-OID, Foreign Accounts."

Check the box “Form 1099-OID for original issue discount income. ”

From there follow the prompts. It will display each individual T/E OID from your imported 1099.

Click each entry one at a time and, using your payer/broker's 1099-OID form, compare each dollar amount to find and add the two-letter state ID (NJ, OH, FL, PA).

This is TOTALLY not user friendly! But the error message went away so I guess we're good.

As long as I'm still sane in the morning.

On Form 1099-OID the State Payer's ID is in Box 13.

If there is no number shown, use the Federal Payer's ID at the top.
