I need to know if the amount to enter is the total amount of rent I am supposed to pay for my rental house, or the amount I actually paid? I am behind on my rent.

It's probably the amount you paid, but what is the state in question?

If this is for Schedule X, the standard is rent paid.  You need to have paid at least $1000 in rent in the year to qualify for the credit.
