Relocated to a different state mid-year, paid original state income taxes all year, bought home in new state in same year (CA to PA)

My wife and I both lived and worked in California from Jan 2024 to Nov 2024. We moved to Pennsylvania in Nov 2024 and worked remotely while continuing to pay California state income taxes. We also bought a house in PA in Dec 2024.

Do we have to file state taxes for Pennsylvania?

Yes, you will have to file a Part-Year California and Part-Year Pennsylvania tax return.  You will report the income you earned in California to California and the income you earned while you were working in Pennsylvania to Pennsylvania.

You MAY be able to argue that you did not intend to establish Pennsylvania residency until 2025 (if you had supporting evidence); but unfortunately, you would still be required to file a nonresident Pennsylvania tax return because you worked in Pennsylvania.
