What if the employer’s state ID number is wrong

If you are referring to the EIN on your W-2, this could be an issue on the side of the payer.

First, please double-check your data entry to make sure that there were no accidental typos. If your data entry was correct, you will need to get a corrected W-2 from your employer. It's best to contact your employer to have is corrected. If they do not correct it, visit IRS.gov for options, or read on:

If by the end of February, your attempts to have the W-2 corrected by your employer are unsuccessful, you can request that an IRS representative initiate a Form W-2 complaint. Call the IRS toll free at 800-829-1040 or make an appointment to visit an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC).

The state EIN is corrected on the federal W2 screen. Return to the W2 input screen, scroll down to the bottom and correct the EIN. You may need to contact your employer for the correct number if the W2 is wrong. That happens sometimes.
