You can delete both states and start over.  To delete your state return with TurboTax Online, follow the steps below:

  1. From the menu, scroll down and select State and Continue
  2. Select Delete next to your state return and Yes.

For additional information, refer to the TurboTax article How do I delete my state return in TurboTax Online? If you are using TurboTax Desktop, refer to the TurboTax article How do I clear my state return in the TurboTax for Windows software?

Review you answers in the Personal Info section to ensure that you answered them correctly.

  1. Launch TurboTax and select My Info
  2. Personal profile summary screen will pop up
  3. Select Edit by your name
  4. Scroll through the screens to ensure that you have the correct answers for your state of residence
  5. Scroll down to Other State Income and select Edit
  6. Check your answer for Did you make money in any other states? Answer Yes, and indicate that you made money in New Jersey.

After you complete your federal tax return and you move to the State Taxes sections, both your nonresident New Jersey and resident New York state returns will be listed.  Prepare your nonresident NJ tax return first. You will get a credit on your NY tax return for the taxes that you paid to NJ.

For additional information, refer to the TurboTax Help articles Do I have to file tax returns in more than one state?,  Why would I have to file a nonresident state return? and How do I file a nonresident state return?

Here's how to delete a state return in the TurboTax for Windows Desktop software:

  1. With your return open in TurboTax, switch to Forms Mode by selecting the Forms icon
  2. From the File menu at the top of the screen, choose Remove State Return. (This won't delete your state program, just the state tax return)
  3. Select the return you want to delete and then select Remove
  4. Answer Yes to confirm
  5. If you want to start a new state return, select the Step-by-Step icon, and then select the State Taxes tab

For Mac users, when you select File at the top of the screen, the choice that appears is Remove (name of state) data instead of Remove State Return.

If you inadvertently downloaded the wrong state software and are still having issues, please contact us and we'll take care of you.

Thank you so much. And I have a few questions more. When I need to choose wages for what state I need to remove.  Is it correct to remove NY state in NJ tax returns? And after I owe money to NJ and have a refund from NY.  Is it possible for me? I live in NY and work for a NJ company ( I’m a representative of an NJ company in a county NY state. I  thought I would get a refund from New Jersey and pay to New York...

If you physically work in NJ, then you would need to pay taxes in NJ.  In this situation you will need to file both a NY Resident Return and a NJ  Non resident return. You will report ALL of your income on both your NJ and NY returns.  You will file your NY return first and then take a credit on your NJ return for taxes paid to NY.

You may or may not still end up owing money to your resident state depending on whether or not their tax rate is higher or lower than your nonresident state.  If the non resident state had a higher tax rate than your resident state, your credit will be limited to the amount of tax you would have paid to your resident state.  They will not give you a refund of the taxes you paid to the nonresident state.

Multiple States

If you are working in an office in NY for a company headquartered in NJ, then you would not need to pay taxes to NJ.

In this situation, you would remove the income from NJ and list it as $0 earned in NJ, you would then leave the taxes withheld as is and get a full refund of the taxes withheld for NJ that you did not need to pay.  In this situation, you should update your withholdings with your employer. Having taxes withheld for the correct state helps to avoid underpayment penalties.

If you live in New York and work only in New York, then you don't owe any taxes to New Jersey.  What matters is where you actually work, not where your employer's offices are located.
