As you pointed out it says STATE RETURNS, not state efile like on federal. My Home & Business CD package says......Includes 1 State via download (Print free or efile for an additional fee) 3. And footnote 3 says....Early e-filing fee is $20 each. Anticipated fee increase in March 2021.
And FYI -
Every March the early prices expire and increase. In the Desktop CD/Download program the State Efile fee is $20 but increases to 25.
But there will be a delay in Desktop program between March 1 when the price goes up and the next time the program update comes out, usually on Thursdays. It will show the $20 price but you be charged 25.
My software was up to date and it still said $20 until they went to charge me and made it $25.
Trickeration. Shame, TT.
here is the bigger issue to me...
why the heck does anyone pay even $20 to efile a state tax return? just print and mail.
I file 4 family members each year and have done so for many years. I have always efiled federal (it's free) and paper mailed the state form.
It is a convenience fee for sure and for me, it is not inconvenient for me to print and spend 55 cents on a stamp.
I am very disappointed that I have to pay $25 additional to efile state. This is a gouge that I would suggest Turbo Tax stop charging for. I would be very interested in supporting legislation that makes filing taxes less expensive.
I have Turbo Tax Deluxe with one free state tax download. I did this and filed my federal return before filing my state (Virginia) return. Upon trying to file my state return, I was charged $20. I somehow got an error for the payment not processing even though I was never prompted for a payment method.
I then got stuck in a loop. Out of frustration I closed TurboTax to restart. When I went through the efile process again, the program is now charging me $25.
What is the fee for efiling ($19.99?) and why doesn't it go through?
There was a price increase back on March 1. The early discounted price $20 expired and went up to 25.
YES I PAID $20 FOR FILING MY CA STATE RETURN EVEN THOUGH MY COSTCO CD FOR PREMIER SAID IT WOULD BE FREE. I THINK TURBOTAX SHOULD CLEARLY NOTE THIS AND NOT BE SO DECEPTIVE ABOUT IT. IT CAUSES BUYERS TO FEEL VICTIMIZED BY FALSE ADVERTISING. ONCE A COMPANY LOOSES THE GOOD WILL OF ITS CUSTOMERS THEN A COMPANY IS VIEWED AS NOT CREDIBLE AND LOOSES BRAND IMAGE.
