TT showing incorrect state tax on amended return

This is an odd one. I am filing an amended return for 2017. I opened my original 2017 TT file under the "amend" function. On the Federal return, this worked OK. On California Schedule X Line 4, however, it shows an incorrect CA state tax refund.

Can I investigate where TT got that figure from? Failing that, is there some way to manually change the figure to the correct amount from my original return?

Thanks,

MB, California

Line 4 on California schedule X is the refund shown on your amended return. That would be based on your changes to the return. In other words, whatever you changed on the return it resulted in a refund of that amount.

So, you would have to compare the amended return to the original one and see what the difference is and investigate if you think it is wrong.

TT showing incorrect state tax on amended return

Okay, I double-checked that; thanks for replying. The problem was actually on line 2, not line 4. It is supposed to be the "Overpaid tax as shown on the original return." However, it does NOT match the original return figure at all. In my case, it is several thousand too high, so my refund on the amended return shows several thousand too low.

Any idea how to fix this? Either scouting out the problem, or manually correcting TT somehow.

You can go into the FORMS mode and correct that number with an override. Then go back through step by step to see if the program will pick it up. If so, you can cancel the override and the correct number will stay.

To override on a windows computer, right click and data source back to where the original entry would be. The right click and override.
