I work from home in MI and with my W2 / employer being in CA. Why is Turbo Tax indicating I have to file a non-resident CA State tax return?

Did your employer withhold CA taxes?
If so, you'd have to file a non-resident CA return in order to get them refunded.
Hi Tom, no CA local taxes withheld, but line 19 indicates $1,641.85 and line 20 Elkhart Cou since the division I work for in in Elkhart IN. W2's address is in Compton CA.
If no CA state taxes were withheld (Box 17 of your W-2), and assuming you never physically worked inside CA, then there is no need for you to file a CA tax return.
In the personal info section of TT, answer NO to the question about having income from another state.
