On the New York State "Let's Review Your New York Numbers" page, there is a line called Estimate and Extension Payments. How is the number on that line derived?

Possibly coincidentally, the number reported on that page is exactly 3 times the single payment that I made when I applied my 2019 refund to my 2020 tax.

New York Estimate and Extension payments are any payments you made towards your 2020 state tax outside of withholding by your employer. It includes the 2019 NY refund applied to your 2020 tax, any extension payment (if you already filed for an extension on your 2020 return) and any quarterly tax payments.

To check your entry:

  • Type estimated taxes in Search in the upper right
  • Click on Go to Estimated Tax Payments

You will see Estimated Tax Payments, Payments with Extension, 2019 Refund Applied to 2020 and Other Income Taxes Paid in 2020. You may have a duplicate entry for the amount of refund applied in one of those sections.
