Nonresident State Tax Return

I'm trying to file nonresident state tax forms for Colorado and South Carolina (I traveled for work in 2019 and had to bill hours to those states). My resident state is Illinois.

When I try to add a state return for Colorado and SC, turbotax automatically pulls from my federal return and is saying I paid $0 taxes in these states, when I have state filing copies that show that I indeed did pay taxes in these states.

How do I manually enter my state forms without turbotax automatically pulling incorrect information?

If your wages or withholding didn't transfer to your state return, go back to your W-2:

  1. Select the Federal Taxes tab near the top of the screen.
  2. Select the Wages & Income subtab.
  3. Find the Income Summary screen.
  4. Select Update to the right of Wages and Salaries.
  5. Select Edit next to the W-2 that contains the state income and withholding in question.
  6. Scroll down to Boxes 15-17 (state wages and taxes withheld) and check the following:
    • Box 15 State should contain the correct 2-digit state code. For example, if an Arizona resident wrongly chooses AR instead of AZ, TurboTax won't pull the information over. Check your US USPS state abbreviation here.
    • Box 16 Wages should contain the wages that were earned in the box 15 state. If this field is left blank, TurboTax sometimes transfers the box 1 (federal wages) amount, but not always.
    • Box 17 State Income Tax should contain the taxes withheld amount (the withholding) for the state in box 15.
  7. Select Continue twice to save your changes. If necessary, repeat these steps for other W-2s.

Thanks!! This works for my resident state, IL, but what if I have two other states that I need to file for as well? It seems like turbotax is not recognizing that I've already paid taxes to those states when it automatically pulls in information

To properly make sure you receive the credits in your resident state, prepare your non-resident states first and then your resident state last. if you have done the opposite, you may need to delete your state returns and then prepare them in the proper order so you can receive credit for the tax you paid in those states.

Even when I do it in this order, I get this explanation of my Colorado numbers. However, my state W2 shows that I paid $40 in colorado already. A similar situation is happening in SC, where it is saying I paid $0, but I paid $930. This is causing me to have tax due in these states when I don't believe I should.

If you imported the W-2, please delete it and enter by hand.

If you did manually enter the W-2, please edit it and review your entries.

Pay close attention to boxes 15 and 17 on the W-2. That is where the state and state tax is reported.
