I am a nonresident of New York State; living in New Jersey but working only in  New York. I work as an independent contractor/self employed in New York. I only earn income from self employment in New York

If all of your income was earned in NY (self-employment), then all of your federal deductions  would be reported in the  "New York Source Portion" field of "New York Nonresident Deductions".

You have to have income in order to have deductions (from income). If all your income was as a New York non-resident, then all your deductions (from income) were as a New York non-resident.
