Must 1099-R Box 15 State match my TurboTax entry?

I moved from North Carolina to New Jersey at the end of June 2023. My pension tax paid should be split evenly between the two states. However, Met Life sent me Form 1099-R with Box 15 State/Payer as NC. (Box 14 is blank – no state tax was withheld.) In TurboTax, can I simply add NJ as the Second State? (I have the NJ state no.) Or must I request an updated (or second) 1099-R from Met Life showing NC and NJ?

Must 1099-R Box 15 State match my TurboTax entry?

Since you moved from North Carolina to New Jersey during the year, TurboTax should prepare two state returns for you, depending on what other earnings or income you may have.

Did you have any other income like wages/earnings or just a Form 1099-R?

TurboTax will prepare a New Jersey resident return and a North Carolina nonresident return for you.

You should enter the information for your nonresident return (NC) first.

When you enter your personal information into TurboTax you will be asked a series of questions to help determine what state tax returns you will have to file.

You should enter your Form 1099-R as it is shown, unless you believe it is incorrect, because a copy of it is transmitted to the IRS and they crosscheck them.

For the year of your move, you'll file a part-year resident tax return in each state, but don't worry – you won't have to pay double the state tax. Each state taxes the income that was earned in that particular state, but most states don't tax the income earned in the other state.
