Michigan Household Resources Worksheet: Medical Insurance paid...

17a: Medical insurance or HMO premiums you paid for you and your family (after tax premiums only).

I am not sure what this is. I was a part time resident in Michigan last year. Looking at the W2s of my wife and I, I don't see anything about this or a Box 17a.

Right underneath is 17b where "Automobile insurance premiums (medical care portion only). Do I need to go back to my auto insurance for this?

Confused, please help.

Michigan Household Resources Worksheet: Medical Insurance paid...

Medical premiums that were paid with after-tax dollars would not ordinarily appear on your W-2. Health insurance premiums through your employer are normally pre-tax and are reported with code DD in box 12 on your W-2.

After-tax dollars are dollars that you have already been taxed on (like from your checking account). This would be if you paid for your medical premiums directly from your checking account and not through an employer.

For some automobile insurance, there is a medical insurance component. You will have to call your insurance carrier to find out if this applies to you.

Michigan Household Resources Worksheet: Medical Insurance paid...

Just want to double check that Michigan household resources worksheet is only looking for after-tax contributions. The item I got when I completed the <Smart Check> asked for the "Medical Insurance paid while a MI resident should be no greater than 0.." My contributions to my health care insurance are pre-tax, but I put them in somewhere and this signaled an error. I changed it to zero and it went through.  I'm not clear what should have been put in here because I cannot access the <household resources worksheet> on MI turbotax.

Please advise.

Thanks

If your medical insurance is paid with pre-tax dollars, then a zero should have been used for the household resource worksheet.   If you pay your health insurance directly, then the amount of the insurance can be subtracted on the household resources.

Sounds like you did it correctly.

Michigan Household Resources Worksheet: Medical Insurance paid...

My understanding is that the medical part of my automobile insurance premiums are to be entered into the Medical Insurance or HMO Premiums section of the MI return and that I should be looking at the Personal Injury Protection (PIP) section of my insurance policy for this information.

There are 3 fees that I pay under PIP:

1. Allowable Expenses: Coordinated

2. Survivor's Loss

3. Work Loss: Primary

Which of these should I include in the Medical Insurance or HMO Premiums section of the MI return?

Thanks

The medical insurance portion of your automobile insurance premiums is deductible. This is identified on your insurance bill as PIP (Personal Injury Protection). PIP is an extension of car insurance that covers your medical expenses. Therefore, all three amounts would be deductible.

Michigan Household Resources Worksheet: Medical Insurance paid...

A follow up question:while a partial resident of MI, I bought health insurance through the marketplace for 2 months before my employer's health insurance kicked in. I received a form 1095A, and I filled out the field for the federal return. However, when I proceed with MI, but I don't see where  I can write the premium I paid post taxes in the MI Household Resources Worksheet (Column A , line 17a has a $0 and won't let me change it with the actual amount I paid). I added $310 in Column B, but clearly doesn't match the $0 on Column B. How can I modify Column A?
