I spend most of the year in California, where I live, work, and get my W2, whereas my wife lives in our Hawaiian house. How do I select the two State residencies?

I have lived and worked in California for 4 years but could only declare partial year residency the year I moved there. I select CA as my residency and HI as my wife's but TurboTax CD Premier chooses the NR forms for both states. This has never been clearly addressed in TurboTax.

Be aware of these Hawaii tax rules:

"A nonresident must file an Individual Income Tax Return—Nonresident and Part-Year Resident (Form N-15), if required to do so.   A nonresident will be taxed on income from Hawaii sources only. A nonresident married to a Hawaii resident may choose to file a joint return with the resident spouse on Form N-11; however, the nonresident will then be taxed on all income from all sources."

See "Nonresident" on page 5 of this reference:

And from California:

"If you filed a joint tax return and either you or your spouse/RDP was a nonresident for 2020, file Form 540NR, California Nonresident or Part-Year Resident Income Tax Return."
